IL MARE DELLA TRANQUILLITÀ by
Sylvain Trudel
translated by Guia Risari
ALET, Padova, 2010
(ISBN XXXXXXX, € 15,00)
Original title La mer de la tranquillité,

Montréal, 2006
Prix du
Gouverneur général
du Québec 2007
(ISBN 978-2-9228-6860-9, pp. 216, € 15)

LE CHIAVI DELLA NOTTE by Sylvain Trudel

Original title Du mercure sous la langue, Les

In English Mercury under my tongue, Soft Skull
Press, New York 2008
(ISBN 1-933368-96-9, pp. 160, $ 13,95)
We all knew him during high schoolthat 17-year-old notebook-toting
sage, feeling deeply, spouting out tiny poems, acting just a little
too wise for his agebut, despite the factors belying it, still being a
17-year-old. Frederick Langlois, the protagonist of Mercury Under the
Tongue, is of that ilk, a younger Kerouac with a sweet nihilism, a
strong sense of family ties, and a lingering (if sometimes resentful)
sense of responsibility to others.
The book traces a short span of the protagonist's life in a hospital
ward peopled with acutely ill adolescents, as they sneak out to go see
the newborns in the maternity ward and play games of imagination where
they cast themselves as already being in Purgatory. The book travels
from his distant but fond relationship with his therapist (and his
mute delight at catching a glimpse of her cleavage), through comic
moments on the hospital ward, his developing camaraderie with other
patients of his age, the survival of some, the loss of others, a brief
glimpse of romantic love, and a final reckoning with himself and his
family, which is both dispassionate and deeply felt.

IL SANGUE DEL

In English Blood from the sky, Elliott &
Thompson, London,
2004
(ISBN 1-904027-17-2, pp. 308, £ 11,99)
Widely regarded as a masterpiece of European and
Holocaust literature,
Piotr Rawicz's "wantonly brilliant novel" (Irving Howe) was first
published in 1961. Rawicz, born in L'viv in western Ukraine at the end
of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1919, survived the war on the run
and then in Auschwitz, before moving to France, where he wrote his two
books in French. He committed suicide in 1981. Peter Wiles's original
translation was published in the USA and the UK in 1964. This new and
definitive edition has been prepared by the literary critic and
translator, Anthony Rudolf, author of the first and only book on
Rawicz in any language. He has restored passages missing from the
first English-language editions and made certain other
revisions. Rawicz's instinctive balancing of literary virtuosity and
extreme subject matter helps explain the impact of the deeply shocking
and troubling work. Blood from the Sky is existentially complex,
indirect and surrealistic, as well as being "often horrifyingly funny"
(Angus Wilson). It re-presents terrifying and cruel historical events
without complicity and without frisson. Few serious novels, even in
the literature of the camps and ghettoes of occupied Europe,
contemplate such violence and cruelty so openly. In the words of the
book's original American publisher, the legendary Helen Woolf, it is
"the only work which totally transmutes the actual events into a kind
of dark poetry".

This multigenerational story tells of one Guadeloupe family's struggle
against poverty and racism. The family achieves wealth, but the dream
of equality eludes generation after generation and leaves its dreamers
broken and withdrawn. A contemporary descendant, Coco, narrates the
story, which moves from Guadeloupe to Harlem and Paris against the
historical backdrops of the construction of the Panama Canal and the
deaths of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. True to the manner of
Caribbean storytelling, the spirits of the deceased continue to haunt
and influence the living, but Coco finally comes to terms with her
family's past and her identity. Of interest to general readers as well
as students of Caribbean literature.

Powerful testimony to an unspeakable historical reality,
this story is
told by an adolescent on death row in a prison in Kigali, the capital
of Rwanda. Dispassionately, almost cynically, the teenager Faustin
tells his tale, alternating between his days in jail, his adventures
wandering the countryside after his parents and most of the people of
his village have been massacred, and his escapades as a cheerful
hoodlum in the streets of Kigali. Only slowly does the full horror of
his parents' death and his own experience return to Faustin. His
realization strikes the reader with shattering force, for it carries
in its wake the impossible but inescapable questions presented by such
a murderous episode of history and such a crippling experience for a
child, a people, and a nation.

Breathe is the haunting confession of nineteen-year-old
Charlene
Boher. From her prison cell, Charlene recounts her lonely
adolescence. Growing up shy and unpopular, Charlene never had many
friends. That is, until she meet Sarah, a beautiful and charismatic
American-French girl who moved back to Paris for high school. Much to
Charlene's shock and delight, the two girls quickly develop an intense
friendship. With Sarah by her side, Charlene finally begins to feel
accepted and even loved.
However, after a brief idyllic period, the girls'
relationship becomes
rocky and friendship veers towards obsession. As Sarah drops Charlene
for older, more glamorous friends, Charlene's devotion spirals into
hatred. Unfolding slowly and eerily towards a shocking conclusion,
Breathe is an intense, convincing portrait of a possessive and
ambiguous friendship.
